Database Documentation

Requirements change. Developers come and go. And time is crucial in everyday's battle-for-market. Imagine, that:
  • A customer wants you to add new functionality to an application, that you didn't touch it for the last 6 months, and what's worse - developers who created it don't work at your company any more. You don't have any database documentation and it is huge enough to make reverse-engineering a nightmare. In the end you lose a lot of money and a customer. All because of poor documented database...
  • You added new developer to a project and asked him to add things here and there to the database he doesn't know
  • Your customer requires you to provide him with full database documentation (prosaic, but very common)
  • Your database administrators need to know what's where and why in the database and you cannot
Having all software project documented is very important. Built-in SQL Server documentation functionality is very poor (only table field description) and very hard to maintain. Moreover, with SQL Server you cannot create any documentation reports.

SQL Source Control™ 2003 allows you to document your database professionally with:
  • Database object documentation for tables, views, stored procedures, triggers and functions
  • Database object properties documentation for
    • table columns
    • view columns
    • stored procedure parameters
    • function parameters
  • Database connection documentation
  • Global database connection documentation
  • Customized HTML documentation reports
Database documenting and versioning is one of the main SQL Source Control™ 2003 features.

Question
Creating documentation

Documentation for the database item is stored with Visual Source Safe in remote source control database. Other users cannot see documentation changes you have made until you check database item in. When you save documentation using Save, documentation file is saved locally in the temporary cache. When you exit the application and reopen it later, you may continue working on the saved documentation even if you didn't check it in the source control database.

Table documetation example

Fig.1 Table documetation example

Documentation for the database item includes:
  • columns / parameters documentation, created independely for each column / parameter
  • global database item documentation, that is used to describe the role and function of the database item
  • database item notes, that may be used by developer for making quick notes and remarks
Documentation for the database connection is maintained individualy through Other \ Connection Documentation connection tree node.

Question
Documentation versioning

for the database item is automaticaly versioned, when you check the database item out for the editing and than check it in the source control database. Documentation hisotry can be browsed through Source Control History functionality.
